Magical Curves

Contemporary Space are delighted to present the work of Rubiane Maia as part of the Salt Festival 2022

Friday 23 to Sunday 25 September, 11am to 4pm

Performance: Saturday 24 September, midday (Duration: 2 hours)

Opening View : Friday 23 September, 8pm-9pm

The Magical Curves project is based on an ancient divination technique called Geomancy, which enables as to read the future by observing drawings, marks and stains on earth or sand surfaces. Like any divinatory process, it is something that is rationally inexplicable, but which, in its intuitive  singularity, inevitably combines basic aspects of Geology. The artist is studying drawing as a sign based on the observation, collection and mapping of accidental forms that can be found on natural surfaces, ravines, rocks and landslides – their properties, colours and textures. In general, she is interested in the poetic narratives, performative experiences, conversations and games that can arise from an attentive and sensitive observation of the materiality.

For SALT + EARTH Festival of Landscape, Rubiane will present an installation composed of drawings, pictures, paintings, video and other materials collected in Folkestone’s Warren.

Rubiane Maia is a Brazilian artist based in Folkestone. Her artwork is a hybrid practice across performance, images and writing; sometimes flirting with drawing, painting and collage practices. In general, she is interested in the body, voice, memory, phenomena and organic matter. As part of her learning process, she is attracted to states of perception, synergy and healing that encompass relationships of interdependence and affect between human and non-human beings as minerals and plants. She often develops research in site specific contexts and travel, always considering the landscape and the environment as guide and co-creators of her artworks.

SITE

The artists, creatives and collectives selected will explore everything from geography to geology, sounds to sculptures and so much more. In the coming weeks, we will reveal more information about the festival and how you can get involved.

SALT Festival began in 2016. Based in Folkestone, the festival’s aim was to inspire and connect people to the coastal landscape and urgent issues of climate change. Previous editions of the festival have included activities and events such as communal sea swims, boat building, rewilding projects, live performances and much more. The expanded festival will now look beyond the coast to the wild and rural parts of Kent and northern France. SALT + EARTH is an ambitious festival that now aims to raise awareness of the climate emergency and UNESCO geopark bid.

Co-curated by Creative Folkestone, Folkestone Fringe, and Kent Downs AONB, SALT + EARTH explores the way the natural environments around us shape who we are and asks what the future might hold for those living on the edge.
